Current Design Procedures

The document will bring together information on current design practice around the country and provide a coherent procedure that may be followed considering differing hydraulic and fish species conditions. The literature review, Culvert Summit, and questionnaire will provide much needed information about design scenarios for both new and existing culverts considering fish passage. It is anticipated that several design scenarios will be suggested that include addressing such issues as:

  • stream simulation techniques

  • active streambed techniques

  • hydraulic design procedures

  • appropriate use of "bare" culverts

  • scour at bottomless culverts

  • inlet loss coefficients and roughness parameters for bottomless culverts

  • low flow traveling through course sediment placed in the culvert barrel

  • appropriate design flows

  • light

  • legal jurisdiction and issues
